new to me 16'

Unread post by coppersmythe » Tue Oct 08, 2019 7:29 am

good morning all from the deep south in louisiana . i recently bought a 1990 rougeriver runner from the son of the owner ( who passed away ) . the dad lived in oklahoma , so freshwater only . closed bow with a split window . 1990 mercury 50 hp . i'm planning to repower with a new 90hp , just not sure what brand . i'll be taking the grandkids out fishing , so reliability is top priority . the deck was rotted out in the back third so i just replaced all of it( in the first photo you can see one of the rotted pieces in the forground ) . marine plywood , multiple coats of spar varnish , then nautalux for flooring ( my first time , hope i did it right ) . also had a new gas tank fabricated , the old one had too many holes . i got a guy to try and weld it , no luck . not something i want to cheap out on anyway , coppersmythe.................ps: i am also on the farmallcub.com forum under the same name , many years .

Welcome to the forum!! NICE work on that boat and I'm anxious to see more pictures as you move forward in restoring. I check all IPs before approving and was surprised to see a registration request from Louisiana. Very unusual to see a Hewescraft in the deep south and I'm glad you joined us! 8-)

thank you for the support . when asked about my boat , i get that "funny look" when i say hewescraft . i think the only new boat that is legal to sell here is the Tracker brand  . i've been looking for about a year on facebook market place and craigslist , but everything down here are bateaus (flatboats) or bass boats . i wanted something with high sides and strong . the first time i saw it, i knew it was the one , especially after reading up on them . i've been on the bayou twice with her , and she just handles awesome ! but , the motor has been finicky and unreliable . i dont want to start a "ford-vs-chevy" discussion . i plan to repower with a new 90HP , and wanted some input on y'alls preferences /experience . thanks , coppersmythe..................ps: she came with the top canvas , the clear side curtains , and the rear section to the floor that completely incloses the "cabin" area, all like new . :D

Excellent work, I always admire folks that are skilled fabricators, always trying to improve on my own feeble skills.

As far as a motor, you'll pretty much get the party line based on what's on the back of their own boat.

Yamaha's are the best hands down in my opinion based on a lifetime on the water.

Btw, I enjoyed my times in Louisiana during my Army year's, kool state.

Outboards, Go with the Best Local Dealer, then price, and don't look back.

90hp in any brand are great mills. and 90hp will Haul A on that boat.

thanks for the input , sounds like good advice . basspro is 5 miles away , mercury is their motor , and a small local outboard ( excellent reputation ) sales and service business that sells evinrude and yamaha , about 15 miles , so two choices . coppersmythe.....................

I just love the Early Hewescrafts. I don't think there would be many Lunds, Crestliners here if Hewescraft was more North America Wide in the 70's/80's.

I remember my Dad trying to replace his 18 StarCraft SS in 1983, (mostly because of Rivets) and you had a hard time findind anything without Casting Platforms even back then. By 1998 when I bought my first Larger Boat, there was nothing in a Cabin Freighting, fishable boat, but for a Lund Alaskan (tiller or side console)

D'oh hit it on the head. Find the shop close to you that provides the best service, purchase what they carry and service.

Personally, I prefer Yamaha, however, the only brand I occasionally hear dissatisfaction about is Mercury... That being said, Everybody's mileage varies...
