Mounting downriggers

Let's see what you're working on.

Mounting downriggers

Unread postby MountainBound » Sun Apr 15, 2018 4:47 pm

Bought a set of Scotty 1106 downriggers. My Searunner has a 1/8" backing plate welded from the transom to about 18" forward, but I don't want to mount the downriggers right at the back. I want to be able to work both sides of them. Has anyone dug out the foam under the gunwales to put a backing plate in or is this and effort in futility? If so, is there and easy way to do this? Thanks.

Jeff, I believe that right in front of the fish box, on both sides, it is all open. I used that area to mount mine.

I've dug all the foam out on mine to install them where I wanted. Wasn't too difficult.

I dug the foam out on mine. I used a poly cutting board that was about 3/8" thick as my backing plate.

The Open Fisherman tunnels are probably different than yours, but I dug all the foam out. I used old aluminum street signs that we custom cut/fit and used those as backing plates under our 1106’s.

Mounting downriggers

I’m curious as to how some of you have mounted downriggers on the factory installed mounts on the Pro V (and other models, I’m sure). The aluminum is 1/8” thick. I bolted the bases for my Scotty 2106s directly to the 1/8” plate with no backing plate. Will this be sufficient when using 15-18 lb. weights ?

I talked to my dealer today and he says I should have no issues with the factory mounts.

Installed a second battery today. Very nice knowing I won’t kill the engine’s battery while anchored with various electronics turned on.
