Aluminum Hardtop Rack / Basket

Unread post by SeaDawg »

Just wondering if anyone has a source or photos of an aluminum hardtop rack / basket that could be fastened directly to the hardtop side rails. Something to carry extra crab pots or anything else I'd like to keep up on top and out of the way. Part of the challenge on the OP is the raised center channel so the bottom of the "basket" would need to be in inch or so higher than the actual rails.. After measuring it looks like the right size would be about 47" fore to afte by 67" side to side with about 6 to 8 in height. I've looked online to see if there's anything pre-made that I can adapt but can't find anything other than regular car toppers. Thanks..

There is a guy with a Kingfisher in the south Sound who has paddleboard racks and a Thule roofbox mounted on his boat. I talked to him briefly but didn't get to check it out. I'm looking at creating a roof rack system too.

Might be worth a call to Hewescraft to see what weight they rate the side rails. Relatedly, does anyone know the weight capacity of the roof? Can I walk on it without denting it?

Funny, we are looking at building one for our boat. We built an Aluminum dock wagon that kicks ass, a rack for the top would be a no Brainer.

I figure this is a good start to look at design. This is wagon we built, just increase size minus the plate floor. I figure will build the floor with flat bar just like the sides.

Funny... I was just playing around in "Paint" trying to sketch what I had in mind. I definitely would want a round tubular mainframe, probably the same diameter and schedule as the existing roof rails..

We bought four rubber mats from Rona that lock into one another and put them on the roof. Then put our stuff right on the roof. Works great. We take the mats down every once and a while to wash the boat top.

Quiet easy to make a stand off rack for the Ocean Pro series. Use 2" schedule 40 6063 pipe with some flat bar to mount it to the rails using a simple clamp system. I'll be doing it later this spring as I have a design already made for it.

I'm sure that all of us here with hardtops would love to see your design. Can you share? Thanks!
