Don't do this!!!

Unread post by ReelSalty » Wed Nov 06, 2019 7:46 am

I bought a new Honda motor for my Ocean Pro. My old motor was a Honda 225- It was great right up to the time it developed a water leak thru the block.

I bought a new motor and thought that "Why not go for a Honda 250 since it was almost the same price." I did it. New motor is Great!

Oh, Oh!!!! Sent the new motor info into my insurance company State Farm. About 6 weeks later I got a notice saying-- Sorry, but we can no longer cover your boat because your boat is rated by the Coast Guard for up to 225 HP. Sure enough, I looked at the rating posted on my boat and it says 225 HP. So now , I have a problem, the Marina where boat is moored requires me to have insurance. I really don't want to put boat back on trailer in my yard, I like it in the Marina ready for use at all times. I will look for other insurance companies, but we will see.

New motor has maybe 20 hours on it So, if someone has a bigger boat with rating of 250 HP or larger , but a smaller motor close to new I could be convinced to make a motor trade.

What a screw-up , Huh?

Is there a way you can reduce the HP from 250 to 225 and will the insurance co let you do it?

Buy a cowling that says 225 Gary...lol. man that sucks, gotta be a way to resolve that, you have a great place for the boat at the marina.

How you been, ain't seen you around on here much.

Whoever sold and installed that motor should have known better.
You might go back to them and say : "Hey!...whats the deal?"
Technically they are liable...I think...

Isn't the 220 OP rated for 250hp? What year is your OP Gary?
They must have changed the max hp rating sometime during a production year?

The Hewes website is crystal clear that the maximum HP rating for the 2016 and newer 220 OP is 250hp..... which I have. 300Hp for the OP 24.

On a side note, in my opinion this whole issue of maximum HP is really all BS anyway. A prop choice alone can substantially change top end speed or hole shot torque for any engine. Maximum Coast Guard limits for boats should be not at all about HP but all about weight. Just my opinion.

Trying to recall, but believe his is an 2009 (same year as replaced main) or maybe 2010 purchased from previous forum owner Dale in 2011. Why do I know that? Was right about same time I purchased the owner's forum from Dale.

Hope you can find a workable insurance solution Gary, would really suck to have to re-power again.

Nice to see a post from you. 8-)

Silverfox

Thanks for the memories.
Your facts are right. It is a 2009 and I did get it from Dale. It is a good boat, but the owner ,me, was not thinking good the day he bought the motor.

I will get this worked out, just not sure yet how.

It has been awhile since I have posted. Jim Dandy, thanks for the pic.I love it.!! Now that was a good day!! best fishing I have ever done, Thanks
I still have the waders from our Cowlitz day and that morning on the Columbia, Oh Wow!!

I also remember our , almost day with Salmon for Veterans-- I was over halfway up to Everett n my boat and you were almost there from your house , in Onalaska, when I got the phone call cancelling the event due to weather. Now that sucked!!!
