As both are doing exactly the same thing within a degree or so, I think this is by design.
Been keeping track of engine temperature for the last month. Ocean temperature was around 56 degrees. River temperature ranged from 60-66 degrees. Does not seem to have a big effect on engine temperature. At 3500 rpms temperature is 192-194. 4000 rpm it bumps up to 197-200 degrees, 4500 rpm 200-205. I am now convinced I have a issue with the engine running hot. Haven’t had it at WOT all summer. Afraid it will go above 212 degrees and enter limp mode.

Here's the mechanic in me with a quick diagnostic.

1. The water pump/impellor is not pumping correctly or you may have a partial blockage somewhere internally.
2. If not above, then get slightly cooler thermostats. You don't want them too cold as they might cause increase in gas consumption.
3. Check water intake and outflow to make sure no seaweed/grass there.

If the engine is under warranty, get it checked at the dealer.

Best of luck.

Hi Fishstory, I think you are looking for “problems” where they don’t exist! The BF250D temp reported on the HD-4/N2K does at first blush look hot for a water jacket in an old motor…

However, I think based on stuff I have read that the sensor reported is a block/oil temp…this motor has three water loops and at least 2 different thermostats!

The only way to really get the “official” inside engineering information and put this question to rest for good is from HONDA engineering…at this point I have not seen anything from them! Asking a friends, cousins mechanics mate will not get the right answer…

Unfortunately the dealers in conjunction with Honda marine itself don’t seem very motivated or inclined to help…they just point at each other which is pretty useless. I don’t know why that would be the case, seems like a really simple and reasonable question to ask???

Thanks all for the replies. Took the boat to mechanic that I trust. Replaced the thermostat, impeller and checked the overall health of the engine. Received clean bill of health. 10 months left on the warranty so I’m going to stop watching the temperature as much and try to relax more. As Ryan, alaskakiwi, stated probably looking for a problem that did not exist.
