Honda BF250 Operating Temperature

Unread post by fishstory »

I've asked several mechanics, internet searches and the shop I purchased the boat at what the normal operating temperatures are for the BF250 and have received numerous answers. So now I ask my fellow Hewes owners. The temperature on my Honda gauge and through the NEMA 2000 on my MFD both indicate between 190-195 degrees at 4000 RPM's which seems high to me, but have not received any high temp alarms. At idle it's around 140 degrees, 1500 to 3000 RPM's it's between 180 to 185 degrees. I've been told it should run between 160 and 180 in all operating ranges and have also been told 200 degrees is common at or close to Wide Open Throttle. I need more opinions so I can assure I'm thoroughly confused.

I have the same year (2017) BF250 and will check operating temps next time out... So far after 325 hours......... this motor has run flawlessly other than a high pressure filter that was replaced under warranty...

Could the reason for the 190-195* engine temperature be the water temperature is warmer this summer?

Running in the lower Columbia and ocean. Water temperature between 56 and 60. Don’t think it’s the water temp.

Thanks hunter. It’s a shame I never paid attention to it until this year. 90% of my use is in salt water and was thinking a thermostat may be bad. Take it in every year for routine maintenance and not sure if they check the thermostat. They did replace the impeller at 300 hrs.

My previous boat had a Honda BF250 and 190-200 was very normal in the lower Columbia and ocean. When I first got it (brand new) I thought it was high too, but was told it is normal. Never had an issue.

No cause for concern…I have two BF250D’s and at cruise rpm (4500) they sit at 192-194F. During the hot spell a week or so back they both hit 196-198F with higher ambient air/water temps.

As both are doing exactly the same thing within a degree or so, I think this is by design.

Thanks for the responses. Much appreciated. There were a lot of differing opinions but other owners advice is invaluable.

I replaced the thermostats on my 200 this spring, and it runs between 190-200 in 54degree Salish Sea at 4500 rpm.

Finally got a reply that explained the discrepancies about what owners are seeing and what the marine mechanics/engineers were saying. This is how it was explained to me. The exhaust temps run at 160, the block temp is a lot hotter and runs between 190 and 205. The high temp alarm is triggered at 212. The block temp is the temp displayed on the MFD screen.
