Trailer hitch lock.

Unread post by Seahusky »

What are you using to keep your trailer safe when doing overnighters or gone out for the day. I had a small padlock that I put on the trailer to prevent it from being detatched from the truck, but I would like something stronger and more robust.

Thank you.

I use a small padlock as well on the hitch, also a locking receiver pin, and occasionally a heavy duty cable lock which is wrapped around the frame and through a tire. If they want it bad enough, they will take it, but they will have to work for it!

And on overnighters or if I need to leave the trailer parked somewhere I run a 10ft section of 3/8 inch chain thru the tires, around an axle, and around the trailer guide rail.

Depending on what kind of truck you have you can buy pad locks, hitch locks, hitch pin licks and trailer ball locks that are all keyed to your truck key. It makes it really convenient when you only need the key you'll always have on you anyway.

Hey Brian, My truck is a 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 12v Cummins 4x4 with 5 speed manual. Shes a great slugger for pulling, a bit slow but she gets the job done :)

I got the receiver and hitch lock at Wallymart, but their pretty easy to find online. I carry the keys on my Armada key ring, and a spare set in the boat.

Great, thank Jim.

I'm thinking all the pins on the receiver are 1/4"?

The locking hitch pin is 5/8th, the coupler locking pin on the coupler lock is 1/4in.

Do a search online for "trailer coupler lock" and "trailer hitch locking pin" and you will get a lot of options to choose from. Some better designs than what I have, but mine work fine....so far.

In addition to the hitch pin lock I use a hitch ball lock. It is a ball that goes into the receiver and locks.

And another lock that goes on a trailer wheel to keep it from rolling.

I have a folding trailer hitch and I pull the pin, secure it, and fold the hitch. Then, if I feel really ambitious, I have a heavy duty lock and chain that I wrap around the folded hitch and fixed portion to keep the hitch from being extended.

They might get it, but they're going to have to bring some equipment and work hard for it. Thieves are basically lazy, so they'll likely pass.

I absolutely HATE thieves. :cussing: I was even considering rigging up an IED.
