Interesting that you mention Tofino. I have a distant relative - my wife's cousin, now passed on - that owned the Tofino Marina and Resort. His fishing guides I believe started salt water fly fishing in the Tofino area from their boats quite a long while ago. I never got a chance to try it there but its what got me thinking along these lines - no pun intended - in the first place. Congratulations on the new boat. Whatever strategy you use fishing, at least you'll be doing it in style!

Wow! Very cool! My dad and I use to go there when it was still Weigh West. Has to be twenty yrs or more ago... Jack and Sean were the guides we always used. They were doing some really innovative stuff with fly gear back then.

My wife's cousin was Dick Close. He owned it when it was Weigh West. Small world. I'm looking forward to trying some of your techniques! Thanks for the detailed instructions! This is a Humpy year here. Hopefully it'll be a good one and I can try fly fishing for them! Even a single hand fly rod should work on them. One thing my ProV doesn't have, that I wish it did, is a pedestal casting chair on the bow. Oh well...

Thank you for the inspiration. I've owned a Loomis GLX 9wt. for about twenty years and only used it on a few trips to the Vedder river in BC for Chum and Springs. With the Coho forecast of 1.7 million off the Washington coast this year I'll definitely be breaking it out of retirement.

I checked out an on line video Bucktail fishing for Coho. It was filmed at Tofino with Weigh West guide named Sean! Worth checking out.
They use a small spinner in front of the fly. I rushed out to my local tackle shop to get the ingredients to make Bucktails. I'm hooked!
Check it out.

Oh man that brings back memories!! Thank you for posting it.

I’d love to get back to Tofino someday. Clayoquot Sound is a really beautiful spot with great fishing.

Woah,COOL. I've never seen that before. I'm not sure fishing on the surface is successful down here. But I'm gonna try running something like that on a down rigger.

Right on! These action discs are another option for adding some movement to the fly. They show some rigged with a hoochie. Which could be a really effective combo especially if you put out a spread with some dummy flashers.
