Stranded along I-5 last night

Unread post by Jim Dandy » Wed Oct 09, 2019 10:16 am

Crazy night last night.....

Making the rounds doing our janitorial accounts in one of our Toyota Yaris work cars, heading from Chehalis to Olympia to clean a major banks Corp. office building. Just driving along and the battery light comes on, then within 10 min all off my accessories start shutting down and more warning lights.....oh oh.

I've been on this train before, I've lost the alternator, and as soon as the car sucks the battery dry I'm stranded.

So I got off the freeway, turned around and started heading back So. on I-5 in an attempt to make it back to a friendly port at my Uncle's house in Rochester. Well dumb move, couple miles out headlights are getting dim, and I started losing my transmission, how that is tied into the electrical system I don't know but I had to pull over at this point.

So stupid Jim that should have stayed off the freeway is now stranded with no lights at 2300 at night along interstate 5...or was I?

Last Christmas I bought 6 of these 2000 amp lithium emergency starters/power packs. Gave them to the kids for Christmas, then kept 3 for us to keep.

Fortunately, I had one in the car last night, so on a totally dead battery I hooked it up and turned it on, wedging it on the engine so it couldn't move, jumped in the car and turned the key.....everything came to life.

So, I got back out, leaving it hooked up to the battery, and closed the hood, jumped back in and got back on the freeway, the car using the power pack as a battery source. Amazingly this enabled me to drive all the way back to Chehalis to a Medical building my Wife was cleaning at the time and to another of our cars and another power pack. Decided not to attempt to get the car back to Onalaska, but pulled the battery, which I'm currently charging, to get the car home later today. Pick up a new alternator later too once I put it on a voltmeter just to be 100% sure that's the problem.

If you don't have one of these compact lithium emergency starters (about the size of a brick) I highly recommend them, as I stated in another thread I carry 2 on the boat when I go out long range offshore.

Saved my butt last night.

Recharging....

This alternator is interrupting my Silver fishing, its intermittent, drove the car home this morning with a fully charged battery. Started a frozen car, no batttery warning light, got everything defrosted, no warning light, alternator is working.....hmmmm.

Halfway home battery light comes on and I'm operating with just the battery as I turn on accessories that require a big load like defrost and heater blower then wipers to check speed, running slower then normal....no alternator power...so I turn everything but headlights off...get car home...turn car off and restart, warning light goes off ....alternator working....put a voltmeter on it... 13 plus...

Not sure whats going on...maybe internal voltage regulator in alternator is going?

I hate internment failures.....either work or don't work...nutz.

Any expert car guys out there have any idea's, I'm a fair mechanic but not great with electrical systems.
My thought is to clean all the connections and make sure its not a grounding issue, then take it for a ride and hit it with the voltmeter when the battery warning light comes on again, making sure the battery is charged first before I go on my country drive.

How many Silvers are sneaking past my cut-off on the Cowlitz today....

Yep. Normally when they fail it's complete, they don't work once in a while. Can have it tested at most any parts store to confirm (suspect that's what you did).

I've had a few fail over the years, never a intermittent failure. Put a voltmeter on it when the idiot light came on again.....10.5 vdc under load...that's way low. One nice thing about having 3 Yaris is always have an example or working vehicle to bounce issues off. Ran the voltmeter on one of the
"working" Yaris.....14.6 vdc on the meter.
