Way to much moss and pesky trout

Unread post by Shooter » Sat Nov 02, 2019 4:14 pm

Went looking for ling( burbot) last night.
Most active in the winter and mostly at night. Prefer NO moon.
Last night it was very small and mostly hidden behind the mountains.
10 mph wind and 37* not the best night but you take what you get.
The GD LOVES to fish ling. I saved some suckers from this summer, very best bait for burbot.
I think they sleep in the deep holes in the daylight then come out to hunt.
We get them at the very edge of the holes downstream.
BUT you gotta be on the bottom, we put on a 3/4 to 1 oz sinker and tie the hook with 6" of leader to it, right on the bottom.
There is still a LOT of moss on the bottom and floating down.
Between the pesky trout and the moss you only get like 2 minutes before your out of the strike zone.
DANG trout pick it up right away some times on the fall.
This time of year the BIG trout feed on the bottom too.
We got a couple of dozen trout most 3 pounds plus, slimmers!!!!
We kept 3.
No ling but the little GD and I had a good time.

I forgot to mention we had a BUNCH of small bats flying around us, the lantern attracts whatever flying bugs are out, they would hit our lines.

Hello Shooter, I don't want to poach your spots, but I am curious if you are fishing the Missouri River? If so, is a jet drive needed or can a prop powered boat be used?
I think i would like to explore somewhere new in addition to Canyon Ferry. Thanks.

YES the Missouri.
That portion of the river , below Holter, can be run with a prop and a smaller boat.
I would not recommend it, we do it in our surface drive 16' boat, and I have put in my 18 foot Hewescraft with a sport jet.
BUT beware, that is float boat/outfitter heaven.
When I put in the Hewes at Craig, when I was parking the trailer my boat was egged.
Threatened and taunted. I want to go back and just buzz the heck out of the float boats, BUT won't just not that kind of guy.

Not the same Montana I grew up in, times have changed and not for the better, in my opinion.

I am sorry to hear that. I have had a couple of instances of bad attitude at Canyon Ferry, but overall people have been nice and courteous with many, many compliments on the Pro V. I think I am going to stick with Canyon Ferry even though it has been a very hard lake for me to figure out. I have owned a place in Montana for 20 years but I live in the Florida Panhandle. I wouldn't wish Hurricane Michael on anyone, but it has really shown how people have to help each other out in the aftermath of total destruction.
