Dont Buy Touch up paint from Hewescraft

Unread post by Beeman » Wed Dec 04, 2019 11:22 am

Well at least dont buy it before you actually plan on using it.
Just to have it on hand I purchased the 2oz bottle from Hewes when I got my boat, about 3 months later I went to use it and the bottle of hardener that you mix with the paint was solid as a rock (I had never even opened it)
I contacted hewes to see if there was some storage requirement I was not aware of (there was not) and I ended up ordering another kit.
2 months later I go to use the paint and again the hardener is starting to set up to the point of not being usable.
With shipping these kits run about $50 so not cheap.

I think in the future for just touch up applications I am going to just get a quality enamel from the local hardware store.

Thanks for the heads up... I have some touch up paint that I ordered last month and haven't used. Sounds like I better do that soon.

You can go to KC Autopaint who has stores throughout the northwest and buy the paint from them. They provide paint to Hewescraft. They sell quarts for much less than your two ounces. You can also have them put it in a spray can if you want.

In years past the touchup paint I was getting from Hewes was one bottle of gray...no hardener ….this always worked fine....this last time I ordered touchup paint I received 2 bottles ….1 gray and 1 hardener.... I had the same issue with the hardener...went to use it and it was hard as a rock ….so not being much of a paint expert I applied just the gray without any hardener to a test piece and it setup hard and looks fine....

Good to know on the paint, always assumed you had to use both parts

The paint i purchased from KC Auto Paint also did not have a hardener and it worked great for small touch ups. It was the exact product used to paint my boat and matched perfectly.

Since this is something I know a wee bit about...

To my knowledge the paint still used at the factory is 2 component, color and catalyst, PPG DelFleet Essential polyurethane enamel. If I remember correctly this is what they've used since the 2006 model year.

Unless the catalyst/hardener is in an air tight container it will eventually harden on its own. The smaller the quantity, the greater the risk and the quicker it will happen. The enamel will dry on its own but won't have the same durability as catalyzed.

FWIW, KC and Pro Finishes (Pro is local to Spokane only) were bought by Wesco a couple years ago, so it's possible there may be greater availability than in the past.

Hope that helps. ;)

Guess it's called "hardener" for a reason !
