Standard Horizon HX890

Unread post by SeaDawg »

Really like the new HX890 handheld waterproof VHF / GPS / Emergency MMSI unit. Full of features but still veryeasy to set up and use. Just got my MMSI No. loaded in so it's now also an emergency sat beacon along with all the other GPS and radio functions. I like that it also has the no brainer emergency distress button that ties to my MMSI. This thing came with a boatload of nice accessories. Mountable charging station, 12V charger, AC charger with EURO adaptor, USB Charger, safety lanyard, etc... Plus it has a LiIon rechargeable battery pack and ALSO has an adaptor that allows you to use 5 AAA's if the LiIon ever looses it's charge... All in all, its just what the doctor ordered in an all in one handheld VHS / GPS / waterproof / floatable unit. This unit was $199 bought from Semper Fi (Gil) over on The Hull Truth. No tax and free shipping.

PS.... I went full safety for Christmas this year so also bought a 2831 ACR EPIRB... Fully registered with NOAA. 10 Year user changeable battery.

Nice, I picked up a very similar Cobra marine handheld several years ago. I attach it to my auto inflate harness when I run solo trips....just in case.

EPIRB is my next purchase....that looks like the GlobalFix V4 unit I've been looking at.

Thanks for the info, I think I'll grab one. I'll feel better on those over the horizon trips with one onboard.

I bought a HX890 last June. Still playing with all the features. Nice units and affordable.

SD.... I'd say that the most important thing you can do with this unit is to register your MMSI number and ID info into the unit so that the emergency "red" button GPS beacon function will kick in if you have an emergency. For anyone who may not yet have an MMSI No..... it's 100% free and could not be any easier. Just go to the US Power Squadron site.

Thanks. I’ve already done the MMSI and ID in this handheld, as well as the hardwired radio in the boat. The HX890 has waypoint logging capabilities as well as routing. I’m still playing with those features and naming routes, etc. I took it to Petersburg, AK last June just after purchasing it. I used it to mark vital waypoints in and around the Wrangell Narrows. It came in pretty handy.
