Recreational Smelt Harvest on Cowlitz.

Unread post by Jim Dandy »

The suits heard me, so this coming Fri there will be a Recreational smelt fishery on the Cowlitz that starts at 0800.

For those interested the best area's are the lower river around Camelot and down to Lexington.

Now since I have this big Valentine's weekend with the wife heading down the Oregon coast on Fri.....lets see, dip at 0800, get home clean smelt, then head out on the trip, romantic smelt dinner in Lincoln City that night, perfect plan.

Just did a scout trip down to Lexington, river dropping but still running high....No Smelt, no birds or seals working....smelt probably got washed down to buoy 10, no wonder their opening it...smh.

Doing another recon on Thurs, will post the results.

Just checked out the river at Carnival Market. River is still a little high and dirty but the three Native Americans that were dipping were not doing badly. I watched for about ten minutes and they were getting 4 or 5 smelt a dip with the occasional 10-15. Better than I thought it would be considering I did not see any gulls or seals working from the mouth to the market. So if you want to spend 5 hours in the rain with a couple thousand of your fellow dippers there may be some smelt to be had.

We also did a recon today starting at the Carnival Market, didn't see many smelt, stopped at about a half dozen spots, the only place we saw good numbers streaming by was our normal spot we dip at along the dike in Lexington, that's we're we will be set up early to get our spot. Hopefully get out quick so I can get on the road down the coast.

Uncle sent me that same pic...lol, must be off Pictorial Pursuits.

Very Well Done Jim. Went to pick the smelt nets this morning and the nephews beat me to them. Stopped by Gearhart around 10:00 and talked to a few dippers in this area below the boat ramp. Not as many people as I thought there would be. I watched one guy for ten swings and counted 15 smelt netted.
AAAA.JPG
Closer to the boat launch they were doing better once they found out how deep they were, about 5-10 per swing. Fish and Game was there counting the male vs female ratio and checking bucket weights.

There were about 10-15 Sea Lions across the river at the mouth of the Coweeman barking and creating major ruckus. I would not be surprised if there are more days allotted run looks good so far.
